Detailed information
The shoots of the Huanarpo Macho bush have been used as an aphrodisiac for men by South Americans for centuries. Although it has a long history of use, this plant has been researched not enough about its properties. However the composition of the active substances and their mechanisms of action have not yet been fully determined, the shoots of this shrub remain one of the most popular remedies in South America used to increase sexual activity
Active substances
Nowadays it has been established that the plant contains a group of polyphenolic compounds that have strong antioxidant activity and numerous beneficial properties, namely catechins and its derivatives - catechin-7-O-glucoside and procyanidin B3. 1 The latter is also found in grape seeds and is considered a much more powerful antioxidant than ascorbic acid or vitamin E. In addition, procyanidin B3 can slow down the breakdown of bradykinin - a peptide that dilates blood vessels. 2 Bradykinin acts on blood vessels, causing increased release of nitric oxide and prostacyclin, nitric oxide is a universal mediator that is involved in many processes. It also plays an important role in the physiological mechanism of erection. Actually it helps to relax the walls of blood vessels in the cavernous bodies of the penis, which stimulates blood flow to them. Recent studies of procyanidin B3 conducted in Japan have revealed that this compound also has a stimulating effect on hair growth. The scientists concluded that procyanidin B-3 promotes the growth of hair epithelial cells in vitro, and also stimulates the transition of hair follicles from the resting phase (telogen) to the growth phase (anagen), in vivo. 3
The antioxidant properties of many products are mostly related to the content of catechins. For example, catechins are the primary antioxidants of cocoa beans and green tea. According to the modern free radical theory of aging, antioxidants reduce the number of free radicals and prevent cellular damage, which slows down the aging process of the body to a certain extent and reduces the likelihood of developing age-related chronic diseases

Please note that some studies are based on preclinical testing in biological models (in vitro). In studies involving model organisms, including humans, only isolated forms of active substances are used. Finally, some of the studies show conflicting data. Thus, extrapolation of the results to a human biological model is possible only in general terms, and sometimes is not possible at all.
